Band Focus!

You may have heard of essiebutton.com 's series on her channel called; Brand Focus? Well, I have had a bit of a brainwave and though instead of Brand Focus, Band Focus! That's right, I have decided, if you guys like it, to do a mini series of focusing on different bands to write about and share with you guys! I will share with you my favourites and recommend some good songs. So what is first on Band Focus? BASTILLE!

Okay, so you have probably all heard of the British band called Bastille, and many of you probably consider yourself a fan. But I bet if I ask you to name three songs you will say a mixture of these things:
  • Pompeii, Things we lost in the fire, Bad Blood.
  • Pompeii.
  • They have more than three songs?
Am I right? I kind of hope that I am not because I absolutely adore this band so much. Seriously, it is an obsession. So basically, Bastille began in 2010 when Woody- drums, posted a flyer through Dan's- lead singer door advertising drum lessons. They soon joined forces and decided to begin a band because Dan had already written quite a few songs on his own- you can find them along with some solo covers on Youtube! They soon found Kyle and Will and Bastille was born. Bastille is called Bastille because Dan's birthday is on Bastille Day (14th July). Early in their music careers they released two free downloadable albums full of fantastic covers, collaborations and original tracks, these included Requiem for Blue Jeans, Walking to Oblivion and my personal favourite/slight obsession, No Angels featuring Ella Eyre. This was a cover of TLC's No Scrubs. Other People's Heartache was unfortunately taken down however I am certain you can still access most of the songs on Bastille's original (not Vevo) Youtube account.

On the 27th of April 2012, their first official single was released; Overjoyed! This confirmed their recent record deal with Virgin. However the video was released in the November of 2011. Bad Blood was Bastille's second single and first official video on their Vevo channel, however Overjoyed and some previous videos were uploaded on their own Youtube channel - BASTILLEvideos. Later on in the year they released the third single from their upcoming album- Bad Blood, called Flaws. They had previously released it for a limited time only but it was re-released. The success of the track got them on the Official Top 40! In the February of 2013, the biggie, POMPEII was to be released, this got to number 2 in the charts.

On the 4th of March 2014- BAD BLOOD, their debut album was released. Later on in the year Laura Palmer and Things We Lost in the Fire were released as EP's. On the 9th of October Of the Night was released, it is a mashup of old schools hits: Rhythm is a Dancer and Rhythm of the Night. Personally I love this track!
The Tracklist for Bad Blood is:
  1. Pompeii
  2. Things We Lost in the Fire
  3. Bad Blood
  4. Overjoyed
  5. These Streets
  6. Weight of Living pt 2
  7. Icarus
  8. Oblivion
  9. Flaws
  10. Daniel in the Den
  11. Laura Palmer
  12. Get Home
  13. (Bonus Track, on my download it was Weight of Living pt 1)
  14.

Now, this got me super excited because on the 25th of November 2013, Bastille released All This Bad Blood, an addition to Bad Blood. The first disk is the same as Bad Blood and the second disk is split into two parts
  • Part 1 - All This Bad Blood - songs from released EP's
  • Part 2 - Other People's Heartache- songs from Other People's Heartache

  1. Poet
  2. The Silence
  3. Haunt (Demo)
  4. Weight Of Living Part 1
  5. Sleepsong
  6. Durban Skies
  7. Laughter Lines
  8. Previously on Other People's Heartache
  9. Of The Night
  10. The Draw
  11. What Would You Do
  12. Skulls
  13. Tuning Out

After the success of both albums and all six, I have lost count, EP's, they were nominated for 4 Brit Awards! Best British Breakthrough Act, British Act, British Single of the Year with Pompeii and British Album of the Year with Bad Blood. They won Best British Breakthrough Act! I was so pleased and I used all of my e-mail addresses to vote for them! They have also picked up awards for Best Cover Woodie at the MTVU Woodie Awards with their BBC Live Lounge cover of We Can't Stop- Miley Cyrus! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pZi7CXE2ac&index=27&list=RD2cuR_Vi6vas

The Band have been touring America recently and are hopefully working on Album Number 2 or is it 3? Maybe 2 and 1/2 haha! Anyway, I hope you have enjoyed this because I adore this band and I am going to do a little list of my favourite 5 Bastille songs (even though I love them all!)

  1. No Angels
  2. Walking to Oblivion
  3. Sleepsong
  4. Oblivion
  5. Laughter Lines
Thanks for reading

Chapter 1: The Facts- continued

Hi everyone, last week's anxiety post was about GAD, so to continue with what I was doing I am going to, as promised, talk about SAD or social anxiety disorder. I do not suffer with this condition as such; however I am a very shy person around new people. I don't know why this is, but I have always been a very shy and socially anxious person- for example, when all the other kids would get up to do a dance at a party I would always be the last person and might I add, with a heck of a lot of persuasion. Even now, at my drama club, I detest improvisation because I am constantly thinking what if other people laugh at me? I also have a really bad 'phobia'? of answering the phone- if it rings and it is someone other than my mum, dad, nan or gramps, it will go to voicemail! I don't know why this is but I am just really afraid of it, like I don't even know what I am scared about answering a phone haha!  So, that was a little background on me and SAD, sort of, now into the facts:

Social Anxiety Disorder

Okay, so SAD is more than just shyness and can cause intense feelings of fear and panic when completing everyday tasks, like me- talking on the phone or going to the shops. Suffers might be afraid of doing or saying something embarrassing or humiliating. SAD can severely impact and disrupt everyday life and interaction with other people, hence leaving the sufferer feeling isolated or alone. If you are displaying these signs, perhaps go and have a consolation with your GP:

  • Dread everyday activities such as:
-meeting strangers
-talking in groups
-starting conversations
-going shopping
-talking to figures of authority
-eating or drinking in groups

  • Have low self esteem and you feel insecure about your relationships
  • Fear criticism
  • Avoid eye contact
  • Misuse of drugs and alcohol to reduce anxiety
  • Panic attacks, I am not going to go into detail about panic attacks because I want to do a whole blog post on it!

There is no actual proven cause for SAD however the NHS do think that genes and a contribution of other factors are to blame. Anxiety UK think that parents may play a part in developing SAD, they think that children who had parents like this could have a higher possibility in developing SAD:
  • Overprotective
  • Not affectionate enough
  • Constantly criticising you, fear you aren't doing well enough
  • Worrying about your manners and appearance, more than the average person
  • Exaggerating "STRANGER DANGER"

Again, like GAD treatment usually begins with CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) (more explanation in previous post) and then moving on to SSRI's if the CBT is inconclusive. However there can be some nasty side effects of SSRI's, here are just a few:
  • feeling sick
  • blurred vision
  • dizziness
  • insomnia (sleeping problems)
If the above treatments are not working for you then psychotherapy could be a possibility, this involves talking with a trained professional about your anxiety, this could be one-to-one, in a group or with your parents, wife, husband or partner. Psychotherapy for SAD usually works on building on social skills and interaction, and will consist of around 25-30 sessions over a span of 8 months.

I hope that this post has been fairly helpful for any SAD sufferers- please check back within the week for more posts on anxiety, music and beauty!

X

(ps. I wrote my GCSE creative writing coursework on a therapy session with somebody with panic disorder- so I may take snippets of that in my next post which will be on Panic Disorder)

Introduction to Beauty

Hiiiiiii everyone x
Okay, it is beauty time- seeing as that is my passion, why not wright about it? So basically this post is just going to be about what to expect on the beauty posts on Did I Just Panic?
It is all well and good sharing products with you that I love, but I don't want to bore everyone with just recommendations, so what would you like to see? Just let me know in the comments. So, my thoughts have been that I am going to do a lot of drugstore reviews and maybe like drugstore/highend comparisons, what do you think about that? I was also thinking of doing nail tutorials and maybe even some makeup ones, however I have not figured out how that would be possible without showing my face! (maybe I will just type out what to do, or show half of my face, or just scrap that idea?) And once a month, I am planning on doing a monthly/current favourites; beauty, fashion, music and randoms- just so you can try out some things that I have been obsessed with!

So I know that that was a small post, but it was just a kind of intro post, but my next beauty post will be about how to feel good about yourself and some top tips to make your make up flawless and beautiful!

I hope to see you soon, please comment! I would love to know what you think and if you see this, tweet me (@didijustpanic) I AM BEAUTIFUL so I know you have seen this and I can follow you back!

Chapter 1: The Facts

Okay, so basically before I get into my story- I think we need to know the facts about anxiety, panic and nervousness. So we will all be learning new things today. Anxiety comes in all shapes and sizes, generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety etc. These are the three main focus points in my first anxiety posts. Today I am focusing on...

Generalised Anxiety Disorder

In a nutshell, GAD (generalised anxiety disorder) is an incontrollable form of anxiety which occurs in a range of situations. It is a long-term disorder and can leave the sufferer not remembering the last time they were relaxed. GAD can display both physical and psychological symptoms which I will summarise here:
  • restlessness
  •  sense of fear and worry most of the time
  • constantly feeling on edge
  • finding it difficult to concentrate
  • being irritable and impatient
  • dizziness
  • tiredness or fatigue
  • palpitations
  • pins and needles
  • stomach ache and feeling sick
These symptoms could potentially cause you to withdraw yourself from your friends and family, perhaps lose an interest in something you once enjoyed? If you are anxious because of a specific reason, such as a severe phobia or suffering with panic disorder, it is easy to find a trigger for your anxiety- your phobia or the fact that you suffer with panic disorder. However for a GAD sufferer it is hard to pinpoint a specific thing that makes them anxious. Not knowing what your trigger is could then make you display more symptoms and resulting in even more anxiety.

Unfortunately the precise cause of GAD is still unknown, although specialists have looked into these areas as a possible cause and it is thought that these could contribute to developing GAD:
  • overactivity in the prefrontal cortex of the brain (the part of the brain that plays a part in controlling feelings and emotions)
  • an imbalance in chemicals found in the brain, dopamine and noradrenaline, these chemicals are involved in the controlling of your moods
  • genetics. you are five times more likely to be diagnosed with GAD if a close relative has it too
  • having a history of traumatic experiences such as; child abuse, bullying, domestic violence. this could also, however, be another condition- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • a painful and long term medical condition
  • misuse of alcohol
So, if you feel as though you could have this disorder- go speak to your GP, a trusted adult (if you are a teenager/child)- this could be a parent or a teacher, a friend, a counsellor, or even e-mail me. I am a teenager myself and have no experience in GAD- just what I have read but feel free to send me a message and I may be able to give you some more in depth advice. If you have been diagnosed with GAD or suspect you have it, do not worry! 1 in 25 people in the UK have GAD so it is really common- you are not a weirdo. However, just because it is common, doesn't mean it isn't serious- so please get help because there are things that can help you. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is usually the first course of action with GAD cases. It is a talking therapy which can help to change the way you view your problems and help you to manage your problems too. However, if this isn't working- anti-depressants are an option. Anti-depressants, don't be afraid. You aren't depressed. SSRI's are usually the prescribed medication (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), they release a chemical called serotonin, which makes you happy and did you know that it also released from the sun (fun fact!). A rise in serotonin levels can improve your disorder- not completely cure! There are also several other things you can do to help yourself- self-help book, support groups, cutting down caffeine and do some exercise!

I hope that this has given you an insight into what GAD is like and maybe helped some sufferers?  I do not suffer with GAD and all my information has come from nhs.uk, so if you want even more information the NHS website is super useful, and perhaps a bit of a wonderland for hypochondriacs like me! Anyways, I have completely ignored my schedule on the ABOUT section on here, and uploading a post on anxiety a whole to days early (I didn't honestly think I would have this done for today, but alas I do!). Thank you ever so much for reading something that took me a heck of a long time to write and I hope, oh I really hope that I have given at least one person a bit of support.

(you do not know my temptation to write:
You Know You Love Me XOXO, 10 points to those who know what show this is from- answer in the comments, and yes they are pointless points :D )
